in this instance the cape was probably ruined......a lot of times taxidermists will have extra capes from smaller bucks harvested in the year to use for the larger deer. Yes you can use smaller buck capes with bigger racks and have it look natural

What are you guys talking about? That is how the taxidermist cuts the cape off of the the deers skull so they can send the hide off for tanning. I do it to all my deer that I plan on mounting, you just have to be real careful around the eyes and mouth. Most taxidermists prefer you let them do it Because you risk messing the cape up.

ffparadivs, you're right. I do taxidermy work, and that looks exactly like a deer after it has been caped out. I am probably sure that is what it is too, but not all taxidermist send off there hides to get tanned. A lot of taxidermist I know tan their own hides because they don't want to mess with sending it off. But yeah, that is the caped out head, and you're right, you have to be careful around the eyes. That is a place you can easily mess up and cut a bad hole if you're not paying attention. Good call though. That is one I'd like to put an arrow too.

Just a note to all of you that think that I took this monster.....I didn't do it. I certainly wish that I did, but it wasn't me. I got this photo from a freind via email. In my gallery, there are 4 or 5 different views of this same deer. And I noticed the bash about the dirty truck in the one photo. Is that really necessary to cut someone's photo down? I didn't think so. At any rate, that is why I have no idea who did take this monster, but wow!

Its October 11th, 2005 and I have yet to kill my first buck, but, man am I ready. I have been hunting about the last 4 or 5 years, and I won't take a shot unless I am sure its going to be a good one. (I don't want to wound one and never find it-I'd never forgive myself) I got my first bowkill last year and it was truly an amazing feeling. I know I have never experienced anything else that made my heart race like that did. As it was a very short period of time, its well worth all the hours I spent sitting and waiting. I am truly hooked and will stop hunting when I am physically unable to go. I love hunting and am still waiting for all of those dream filled nights to come true........
